Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7, FZ38 and GH1 comparison Test Video (V2) - outdoor lighting
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7, FZ38 and GH1 comparison Test Video (V2)
A sequence of video sequences shot in parallel with the TZ7,FZ38 and GH1 to give comparisons of image size and quality at either end of the zoom range. Shot under a variety of outdoor and indoor lighting conditions these sequences should give enough information to enable an informed opinion to be made about the various parameters of each of the cameras. In addition to the Panasonic Lumix camera sequences a parallel sequence shot with the nikon D5000 with standard kit lens are included. It is possible to make benchmark conclusions about the Nikon quality from this video. The opening sequence is shot with a Nikon D90 with f1.8 50mm lens set at f2.8 to give some opinion as to the D90 video quality with a prime lens. Hand held stabilisation shots are included at full zoom on each camera. Sequences were shot outdoors and indoors under tungsten and fluorescent lighting to compare AWB operation.

is there a software (PC or Mac) that recognizes the DMC-FZ38 as external camera? So that I can use the computer screen to see what I'm filming. :o)
ReplyDeleteif you wanna see more stuff filmed with the tz7, check out my videos - all filmed in 720p with a tz7 - amazing camera

Well done in many ways but all samples show quasi-static shots, like video photos. It would have been nice to see how the cameras handled movement - even just a passing car in the street. The inability to produce smooth motion (no global shutter) is the biggest defect with consumer/pro-sumer HD cameras today.
ReplyDeletethis was put together in sony vegas home studio platinum edition if i remember correctly.
ReplyDeleteWhich program do u use to edit and paste different video files ? thanks

ReplyDeleteThanks for viewing and your kind comments. The FZ38 has been discontinued, although it may be instock at some suppliers until they run out. The FZ45 or the FZ100 replaces this. I have the FZ100 and like the articulated screen and the 24x optical zoom. More thorough tests needed to determine the real image quality compared to the superb images from the FZ38.
ReplyDeleteI must say that this is the most serious test of superzooms imagequality I've seen on the web so for. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this movie! It would have been intresting to add a couple of cameras, for ex. let say.. the Canon models, SX20, SX200 etc. But you cant have it all.. =) Thank you , once again! //Future FZ35/38 buyer! =)
ReplyDeleteYes the Nikon D90 image was very soft and had sharpening plus unsharp mask applied to try to get a better result ( but obviously overdone ) I was really dissappointed with both the Nikons video quality especially as it was mjpeg and about 40Kbps data rate. With the lack of manual control also makes this camera virtually useless for anything but studio, stage managed lighting IMHO.
ReplyDeletePanasonic cameras look a lot more sharper and fluid in motion picture.
ReplyDeleteIMHO GH1 provides the best result in terms of image quality (look at that DR), however lacks the versatility of the TZ7 and FZ38.
TZ7 looks a bit sharper than FZ38 and D5000 video quality looks quite bad, luckily still quality is a lot better.
@ghough12, on the beginning, when you're speaking, the image looks quite 'cooked', over sharpening halos and some sort of NR applied too strongly... did you post-processed that part?
at wide angles 2mm mean a lot... but at tele end 2mm are nothing... since focal lengths are proportional (50mm x 2 = 100mm and is effectively the same as double the size of stuff on the image) if you compare ratios like 25/27 you could say the difference in view size is more than 7% ... quite significant in my opinion...
ReplyDeleteYeah your right, there that expensive I would debate about a DSLR. Plus I compared the specs with the older FZ38 and the new one and there's nothing major to convince me to spend £350.
ReplyDeleteyeah. the FZ40 and the FZ100. I just bought the FZ38 as it was only £212 and I guess the new ones will be about £350
ReplyDeleteThere are two new models form Panasonic that are coming out in August. They are successors to the FZ38/FZ35 check the Panasonic website!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it could be true!!! FZ18 was introduced in summer 2007, FZ28 in 2008 and FZ38 in 2009 ... If the time schedule is confirmed (roughly a year for every camera refresh) i think that in august-september we have another Panasonic SuperZoom Bridge camera....
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's convenient to wait ... FZ38 could be offer in special discount!!
im going to buy the FZ38 but im worried incase a new model comes out just after I buy it..
ReplyDeleteYes, it is extremely dissapointing that the avi from the nikon is so poor in quality as the stills are really great. Even after sharpening the results aren't worth using - it's ok if you want a soft focus cinematic look but not for traditional video stream
ReplyDeleteQuite obvious from this that the tz7 is the best with the nikon the worst i think for quality.
ReplyDeleteyes, when i uploaded it i found i had not applied the 2.0 crop factor.
ReplyDeletewill annotate the video as several people have now pointed this out
the GH1 equivalent is 28-280 , not 14-140 ;D 2.0X
ReplyDeleteHi, thank you for your help. I take the image in my house. When it's cloudy outside most of my images are very ugly. The colour is weak and the quality seems so bad. Especially when I put the pictures on my pc and if I zoom in I can see the bad quality. Is this really worth the price of this camera or did I do something wrong?
ReplyDeleteThe specification of the FZ38 is 18x optical zoom lens (27- 486mm equiv.), and the TZ7 12x optical zoom (25-300mm equiv), and these shots were taken at the minimum and maximum zoom from exactly the same location - what you see is exactly as you get from the camera!
ReplyDeleteIm so sorry my friend but you are mistaken about 1:45 and other angles when u switch the cam's...No way that 2 mm can cut of so much tz7 vs. fz38...
ReplyDeleteIn iA mode you will get good images - you don't say where you are taking the images - a rock concerts? dark rooms etc. With more information i might be able to help!
