  3. It is a FACT that compact fluorescent lamps not designed for such operation are a fire hazard on any kind of solid state switch. Most are not designed for them. It is also a FACT that they will fail prematurely any fixture where there is insufficient cooling for the lamp/lamps. Yet another FACT is that they often burn up when they die. So no, CFLs are not better.

  4. That's a load of BS. I still haven't checked out LED lights, but I've been using quality CFL lights at home for the last 5-6 years, and they've paid for themselves many times over in electricity savings as compared to incandescent bulbs. Sticking to traditional light bulbs in 2012 is plain stupid (as it was already in 2011 when you wrote that comment).

  5. I have that light bulb, i payed $9.97 for it. According to other testers this one uses 8.6 watts not quite 9 watts at 429 lumen. They seem to get brighter the more you use them and i do like them.

  7. Wow, I think we should all just buy LED because Obama said so

  8. Almost all LED lamps run too hot for indoor use. Compact fluorescent lamps that are readily available to the average Joe Blow are horrendous quality wise and cannot be safely used in most incandescent fixtures. Quality compact fluorescent lamps are big bucks, and still cannot replace most incandescent lamps. The incandescent lamp is, has always been and will remain for some time the ONLY universal light source. That politicians say otherwise is the ultimate proof of same.

  9. Why would you stash light bulbs? I urge you to do a cost savings analysis on LED versus incandescent bulbs to see how fast you will recover your savings.

  10. I'm keeping my incandesants. I have a stash of about 200 incandescents. I ad another 8 to 10 bulbs each week. I urge everyone to start stashing incandesants away.

  11. : How is the light color of the Reveal cfls?...I've been tempted to grab a set to try out but somehow remember they're still on the warm side. I'm particular in color...I'm a big fan of 4k to 5k...65k I sometimes like but a bit too blue.

  12. Home Depot is now carrying Eco-Smart (aka Lighting Science) PAR wide flood bulbs with as high as 125w equivalents...1,300 lumens with either 3k or 4.9k kelvin for $46....not cheap but they are excellent.

  13. : true about the cost but I still have loved every bit of my change from cfl to led. I agree about the heat damage...no one should ever buy an led without a suitable heatsync. I wouldn't say cfls are more efficient....for mood lighting I've got 10 new generation LOA 40w 4.1k LEDs that are just 2.5 watts and produce excellent omni light...and were only $5.87. For real light power I've got LOA and Li-Sci PAR bulbs that are 60-75 w equivs for up to 1200 lumen.

  14. : Wow...haven't heard about the Evolux....claiming 900 lumens as 100w??....that a joke...that kind of crap is going to ruin the industry. The EcoSmart omni bulbs 60w equivs that are made by Lighting Science for Home Depot are 950 lumens at 4.9k and are excellent... the 3k version is either 850 or 900 lum...

  15. I've convered all my lighting to LED lighting and it's fantastic. There's absolutely no reason why not convert to LED as your old bulbs burn out. Hell...just replacing your highest used 4 bulbs around your house will lower your kw usage.

Keep in mind that on average 20% of your electric bill is from your lighting...places like Home Depot has 75w equiv LED bulbs...there's no reason why anyone needs higher power than that inside their home. For outdoor LED PAR40s are excellent.

    ReplyDelete
  16. : Watch the rest of the video, 60w equiv is not the max...75w equiv PAR40 is at Home Depot...100w equivs can be ordered online, but are still a bit expensive.

  17. @sbergman27 Those are interesting figures. So for now it's CFL for high-power(70w+) and LED for the rest..
